A man reportedly sawed off his own leg while high on the ‘zombie drug’
Spice. Medics in Prokopyevsk, Russia, fought to keep the unidentified
individual alive after he consumed the notorious highly addictive
synthetic cannabinoid.
It is not known how he managed to get to hospital, but he was rushed
into intensive care as doctors tried and failed to save his leg.
Disturbing images showing a doctor holding the cut off limb were posted
to social media.
The man took the drug, which leaves many users in a ‘Zombie-like state’
along with a cocktail of painkillers, according to reports. Spice
consists of a mix of herbs and laboratory-made chemicals with
mind-altering effects.
It is typically smoked and can be up to 200 times the strength of normal
cannabis. Known as ‘fake weed’, the National Institute on Drug Abuse
has said the health effects can be ‘unpredictable and dangerous’.
Depending on the strength, and the chemical involved, smoking Spice can
be fairly close to the effects of smoking weed, with users feeling
giggly and relaxed. However, side effects can include psychotic
episodes, confusion, violent behaviour, suicidal thoughts, blackouts and
vomiting.
